A cold evening at Cropston

The visitor center car park!

Let it snow, let it snow...

A glass of mulled wine warmed everyone who braved the dreadful weather conditions on Saturday 27th November to give their support to the annual Christmas event arranged by Charnwood Branch of Cancer Research.

The weather was so bad that during the morning serious consideration was given to cancelling the whole event but as all the food had been brought, the beers and wines delivered, and the entertainment was prepared to brave the weather, we decided to carry on with our Christmas Curtain raiser.

By popular demand, our entertainment for the evening was a return visit from ‘Yesteryears’. During the week they too had problems as a many of their group were ill with colds and flu and one member had been taken into hospital. But just like the true troupers they are, they rang around friends and supporters to ensure that on the Saturday evening we had a full programme of singing, fun and laughter.

The entertainment.

Yesteryears.

We thoroughly enjoyed the ‘old fashioned’ humour of Len, their compere, who amused us with tales of Christmas past. He had yet another wonderful rendition of the Twelve Days of Christmas. It was a cautionary tale about the ‘true love’ who received the presents and what the ‘true love’ experienced when presented with the traditional gifts during the twelve days. Would any of us really like to receive ten lords a-leaping, plus eleven pipers piping, plus twelve drummers drumming ~ not to count all the live stock which had been sent in the previous verses. However, with the current price of gold I think we none of us would have refused the ‘five gold rings’.

Merry revelers!

Seventy eight people joined us on this cold evening. We thank them all for, not only braving the weather, but giving up the opportunity to watch the two main attractions on the television - Strictly Come Dancing which including ‘dancing’ Ann Widdicombe and X Factor.

Once again we were very grateful to Severn Trent Water for allowing us to use the Cropston Visitors Centre ~ this event was the 10th event we have held there. On that particular evening the Centre looked like a fairy castle amidst all the snow and frost.

The evening raised £1,026 which was a truly amazing amount considering the dreadful weather conditions.

Many thanks to all our friends and family who continue support us in our work to raise much needed funds for research into the many treatments and cures of cancer ~ and if you were unable to join us for this event we shall be holding a Beetle Drive at the Woodhouse Eaves Village Hall on Saturday 7th May 2011. Hope to see you there!
