Beetling away for Cancer Research
A fondness of beetles
On Saturday 7th May the Charnwood Branch of Cancer Research held their third Beetle Drive at Woodhouse Eaves Village Hall.
Before we began the ‘battle of the beetles’ a certificate was presented to Gemma Pole. Gemma and Blaithe Hughes who live in Woodhouse Eaves decided to have some creative fun and organised an afternoon tea fundraiser for Cancer Research. The cake sale was held in Woodhouse Eaves village hall and within an hour and half they had completely sold out! Their fundraising activities included a raffle prize draw, a guess the sweets in the jar competition and a sweepstake. A great success from the two 16 year olds raising a massive £430.
After all the excitement of the Friday Royal wedding followed by a hectic Thursday of local elections we were hoping that our Saturday Beetle Drive wouldn’t be a bit of a ‘let down’ so on the night it was great to see parents, grandparents and children coming as a family to the event. By now everyone knows how to play the game of ‘Beetle’ but on Saturday there were some wonderful variations. The game caused a lot of laughter and moving from table to table meant that everyone got to know one another.
We are delighted that the event raised £280 for research into the early diagnosis, causes and treatment of cancer.
Mariko Terashi
and before this event – in March we had held our usual Big Breakfast at Roman Road, Birstall. Once again the home of David and Jan Gaskell was opened (especially their kitchen) to friends and family who came to enjoy a very traditional good old fashioned English breakfast – sausage, bacon, eggs black pudding, tomatoes, mushrooms and fried bread with lashings of toast, fruit drinks coffee/tea. Our numbers were so much higher than we had anticipated and so a search party was sent out during the morning to bring in reinforcements of bacon, eggs and black pudding – and for those who sadly missed the breakfast – there was afternoon tea with home made cakes and pastries.
We were delighted that Mariko Terashi, a local pianist who regularly plays at lunch time concerts at the Richard Attenborough Arts Centre and is well known on many concert platforms around the UK and in France, joined us for afternoon tea and gave us a short impromptu piano recital.
The event raised £760.
If you missed either of our March or May events do check our web site to see what we are doing during the remainder of the year.
Finally the committee members of the Charnwood Branch of Cancer Research UK offer their grateful thanks to all our friends, family and supporters who during 2010 helped us raise and receive a staggering £23,500.
