A cheque for £16,500 is presented to Cancer Research UK

Would you believe that we have now been collecting funds for Cancer Research UK for 33 years, not all of us of course. At our review of the year in April we were proud to present a cheque for £16,500 to Debbie Fitzgerald, Leicestershire Area Volunteer manager for Cancer Research UK.

Of course thanks must go to you all for donating your money in the first place. Those new faces that joined us for our sponsored walk from Hathern enjoyed a warm spring day to accompany their exertions and helped raise nearly £600. Morrison's shoppers were especially generous filling our collecting tins with nearly £1400! Maybe they realised that every penny collected goes to Cancer Research UK. Food always goes down well; the cake stall, coffee morning, and Charities Fair raising over £500 between them.

We are also fortunate to have other groups in and around Loughborough who support CRUK. The Wymeswold Carol singers MUST be mentioned, singing in bitterly cold weather around their village they were justly rewarded with nearly £1300. Whilst the Loughborough Lions and the Blue Wave Martial Arts Group continue to support us. And we mustn't forget one elderly lady who is still collecting "Coppers for Cancer" who hasn't forgotten us in 17 years!

Finally Pauline Swain, a member of our group, and a member of the Concorde Singers choir, sadly passed away in May 2009. The choir chose to give a concert in her memory and donate their proceeds to CRUK.

Our Group

“The Friends” will continue to provide fundraising and to assist with organising events. Our small friendly group has members from Loughborough and the surrounding villages and we welcome new faces to help either on a regular basis or occasionally. Many hands make light work - so could you lend a hand? Why not become a "friend" and play your part in the battle against Cancer?
